Muong Hoa valley is located in Hau Thao commune, taking 8 km from Sa Pa town in the Southeast. It is not surprising that Muong Hoa valley is the most selective destination for tourists immersing in its natural beauty. Typically, the ancient stone with various engraved images, lying between the grass and the terrace fields of the ethnic minority. Hundreds of sandstone carved drawings, strange characters so far have not identified the source and meaning. Today, the ancient stone was ranked national monuments, a unique heritage of the ancient Vietnamese. In this place, scattering along the mountain range is a strange stone carving area over 4km in length, 2km in width, with at least 159 stones, containing many special figures, rocks, … being the concentration of many Vietnamese, Russian and Australian scientists as well.
The populations of ancient stone possess beautiful carvings concentrated in Ban Pho. According to local people, the mysterious figures in Sa Pa ancient stone can be originated from many ethnic groups living in different periods. They painted either rudimentary or figurative drawings on the stone to represent the hallmark of many Dao, Mong, Tay, … people in many different cultural classes. With large stones, the surface is engraved with different shapes, especially the shape of people in many positions: the figure is out of hand, round head radiates aura; have people holding hands; shaped figure upside down, as the manifestation of the real worshipers on the pictures of Dong Son bronze drums. They not only perform artistic value but also spiritual significance, bringing a mysterious message from ancestors to their descendants, one of the attractive points of Ancient Stone for visitors.
