Overview of Vietnam Weather

Vietnam is a nation in South East Asia and located in area of tropical climate. Mountains and hills cover nearly three-fourths of Vietnam, together with a long coastline, plays a major role in forming Vietnam weather with typical monsoons and high humidity. However, because of the diversification in topography, the climate in Vietnam varies greatly from north to south with three distinct climatic zones – North, South and Central.

Northern Vietnam Weather

Northern Vietnam is characterized by tropical climate with four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. The summer is frequent hot, humid and rainy from April to September. In the peaks of June and July, the temperature may rise to 37°C. From October to March, it is general cool and dry. December and January expect coldest weather in winter days of Northern Vietnam that the temperature can drop to below 10 degree. Hanoi and Ha Long Bay are famous tourist attractions in the North. Hanoi is the most beautiful in the autumn from September to November. By contrast, the best time to visit Ha Long Bay is from March to May, when the weather is warm and extremely appealing to relax on the sundeck along the bay.

Central Vietnam Weather

The centre of Vietnam has hot, sunny temperature and dry throughout January to July with temperatures often reach 30°C. This region is famous for the most attractive beaches in Vietnam. It is a good time to head to beach town of Da Nang to enjoy the sun and sand during these months. August brings a change of climate with temperatures remaining hot and humid but rain becomes more likely. In the winter, the rainfall increases and achieves peak level in October and November, and typhoons may occur in these two months. The Centre Highlands has more consistent weather with cool all year round. Da Lat, a famous place in the Centre Highlands, is ideal destination to avoid the heat in summer.

Southern Vietnam Weather

The climate of the South in Vietnam is split into two distinct seasons, wet and dry. The wet season lasts from May until November but the rainfall is highest in months from Jun to August. The dry seasons starts in Novembers and ends in April. However, the weather is generally hot year round. The average temperatures range between 25 – 35°C through the year. There are many beautiful spots and tourist areas in the Southern Vietnam such as Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City or Mekong River Delta. Islands of Phu Quoc and Con Dao, in the far south, are best visited in dry seasons.
