Meo Vac is a mountainous district located to the north of Ha Giang Province. It is far away from Ha Giang City 164 kilometers and Hanoi Capital 480 kilometers. Meo Vac has geographical coordinates of 22022’ – 33019’ north latitude and 105012’ – 105024’ east longitude. The district shares borders with China and Bao Lac District (Cao Bang Province) in the east, Yen Minh District (Ha Giang Province) and Bao Lam District (Cao Bang Province) in the south, Dong Van District (Ha Giang Province) in the west, and China and Dong Van District (Ha Giang Province) in the north. Meo Vac town is known as home of the magnificent Ma Pi Leng Pass, the final point of Happiness Road, and also the core area of Dong Van Plateau Geopark.

Meo Vac town has the altitude of 1,000 – 1,500 meters and the average slope of 250 – 350. The topography of the district is quite complex, 90% of the total area is rocky mountains. This isolated town is lying in the heart of a valley, which is surrounded by limestone hills and mountains in all four sides. Meo Vac town is known as a locality of 17 ethnic groups including Lo Lo, Dao, Giay, Mong, Tay, Kinh, Nung, Hoa…, in which, Mong Ethnic Group is the most populous, accounting for 90% of the district population. For that reason, once visiting the town, travelers can explore multiple cultures of Vietnam ethnic groups. The leisure pace of life along with the honest and warm-hearted people makes this small town an ideal place to stay away from the hustle and bustle of big cities.
When is the best time to visit Meo Vac town? Well, you can travel to the town all year round because it has different and distinct beauty in each season. However, if you desire to indulge yourself in the romantic and poetic beauty of buckwheat flower (Tam Giac Mach flower), the most ideal time to visit Meo Vac town is from October to December. Once setting foot in Meo Vac town, do not forget to come to its traditional markets to buy exquisite brocade & weaving and knitting products and try exotic specialties such as dried beef, corn wine, or “thang co” – a traditional dish of Mong people made from animal meat and viscera.
