The golden colors of rice terraced fields in Hoang Su Phi always hold considerable appeal which is hard to resist for any backpackers and photographers. Recognized as Vietnam National Heritage in 2012, Hoang Su Phi is not only known by Vietnamese people but has also become widely renowned by foreign visitors.
Hoang Su Phi is a rural district of Ha Giang Province. The district shares borders with China to the north, Xin Man District to the west, Vi Xuyen District to the east, and Bac Quang District and Quang Binh District to the south. It spreads over six communes of Ha Giang Province including Ban Luoc, San Sa Ho, Ban Phung, Ho Thau, Nam Ty, and Thong Nguyen. With the total area of around 629 square kilometers, Hoang Su Phi is home of 12 ethnic minority groups. The most populous group is Nung community, accounted for 38% of the population. It is followed by Dao group (22%) and H’Mong people (13%).
Hoang Su Phi is famous for its rice terraced fields, especially on the road between Hoang Su Phi and Xin Man, where those terraces were recognized as a National Heritage of Vietnam. The long and winding terraced fields coated in the golden color of ripe rice will gladden anybody who has love for nature and beauty. However, please be kindly noted that ripe rice season only happens once each year, therefore, travelers must choose the right time to be able to adore the golden rice fields. The timing of ripe rice season in here often lasts from mid-September to late-October. Usually, the best time for admiring the golden terraced fields falls into the second week of October.
As the road network in Hoang Su Phi has been improved better than before, tourists can travel to the district by both car and motorbike. Regarding to the convenience, the best choice is motorbike because of its mobility. However, if your driving ability is not so good, travelling by motorbike is very dangerous because the routes to Hoang Su Phi is not easy at all, especially in autumn when rains occur frequently.
Visiting Hoang Su Phi, travelers have a wonderful opportunity not only to admire the winding roads, the terraced fields, and the peaceful highland villages, but also to eat exotic specialties. Especially, Hoang Su Phi is pretty well-known for rat meat. It may sound strange but rat meat is an indispensable dish in the ordinary lives of La Chi People (in Hoang Su Phi District). Rat meat is present in any festivals or rituals of La Chi community. It will be a huge omission if you pay a visit to Ha Giang but do not taste rat meat.
