Located at the border of Vietnam and China, Ban Gioc Waterfall is considered as the fourth largest waterfall along a national border, after Iguazu Falls (Brazil – Argentina), Victoria Falls (Zambia – Zimbabwe), and Niagara Falls (Canada – America).
Ban Gioc waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls not only in Vietnam but also in China. This natural Vietnam – China border is situated between Trung Khanh District (Cao Bang Province, Vietnam) and the limestone hills of Daxin County (Guangxi, China). According to Chinese people, Ban Gioc Waterfall consists of two separate waterfalls. However, on the side of the Vietnamese, they believe that Ban Gioc is the only one waterfall with two parts: main waterfall and subordinate waterfall. It is estimated that the waterfall has the width of 208 meters and pours down from the height of 30 meters.
Ban Gioc Waterfall is considered as a priceless gift that the nature bestowed on Cao Bang Province. “Majestic”, “romantic”, and “poetic” are adjectives that tourists often use to describe this masterpiece of nature. Even from a far distance, tourists can hear the deafening sound produced by strong currents of the waterfall. The waterfall is surrounded by peaceful rivers and green rice fields in front and Quay Son River at the back. Across the river is the territory of the neighboring country.
Ban Gioc Waterfall belongs to the temperate climate zone with four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The average temperature is from 250 – 280C in summer and 160 – 170C in winter. Especially, in hot summer day, this place is still pretty cool and pleasant, therefore, this is an ideal destination to escape from the sweltering air once visiting Vietnam. The easiest and most convenient way to travel to Ban Gioc Waterfall is booking a private car or a bus through a travel agent because it takes you a very long drive. Specifically, the distance from Hanoi to Cao Bang City and from Cao Bang City to Trung Khanh District is respectively 272 kilometers and 65 kilometers. Ban Gioc Waterfall is about 20 kilometers to the northeast of Trung Khanh District. The total length of the trip is around 360 kilometers.
