Pakse is the capital of Chanmpasak province, one of the biggest cities of Laos. To get in Vientiane from Pakse, you may have several options to select.

4) Get in Vientiane from Pakse by bus
Pakse has been providing two bus stations. They are Northern bus station and Southern bus station. You may get on a tuk tuk to get in the bus station, talk to the driver about your target place. It might be easier.
– Northern bus station:
The distance from the northern bus station to the city center is about 10 km. These buses are not fast and have no air-conditioner. From Pakse to Vientiane, the distance is about 680 km.
You should notice that there are not direct buses from Pakse to Vientiane. Therefore, you will have to stop and change two buses to Vientiane. Travelling time is roughly 16 to 18 hours, at the price from 100,000 to 150,000 kip.
– Southern bus station
The Southern bus station is 8 km to the south. On route 13, from the center, it costs about 40,000 kip if you go by motorbike. However, there are no buses have direct route to Vientiane. Therefore, of you want to visit Siphan Don or Bolaven Plateau, you should choose this route.
– VIP buses
VIP buses to Vientiane are next to the city center, particularly the Champasak shopping centre. It will take you about 10 hours to get there.
The trip costs about 170,000-190,000 kip (this price might be different depend on the fact that you buy tickets at a tour agency or in the bus station).
There is a broad range of VIP buses operators. Among them, there are two common bus companies, which are: Chitprasom and Kriang Kai. These two bus operators are sleeper buses. Or Kriang Kai is providing private bus which is about 2 km from the center.
The price of ticket will fluctuate from 170,000 kip (if you can share a double seat with another stranger); 210,000 kip (with one seat bus) to 250,000 kip (for a double one).
Transportation guide from Pakse to Siphan Don (4000 Islands)
To get to Siphan Don (4000 Islands) from Pakse, you can get by bus, minivan, boat and plane.
1. By bus:
There are usual departures daily from 07:00 am to 03:00 pm from the Southern Bus Terminal of Pakse. The Southern Bus Terminal of Pakse is about 8 km from the center. An important thing you should know is that it will be better for you to depart Pakse earlier than 02:00 pm, because it will take you about 3 hours and a half to arrive in Nakasang. Therefore, if you leave Pakse later than 02:00 pm, you may get in Siphan Don late at night.
The price is about 40.000 kip/person (it should be noticeable that this price might be changeable depend on time).
The last stop is Nakasang, in the main land, next to Don Det. The bus will stop near the bank and QTM. You will have to walk about 500 meters to reach the Mekong.
Choosing this option, you may have opportunities to enjoy the conventional atmosphere of Laos, which is windy and airy. However, you also need to be alert with social evils such as theft, robbery, pick pocket, ….
Except for the end of route, in general, the way is quite straight and easy.
2. By minivan:
You can buy minivan ticket at your hotel, hostel and other travel agencies. The price will fluctuate from 60,000 to 80,000 kip (you should remember that this price has included tuk tuk fee to your station). This minivan will leave around 08:00 am and you will save much time than going by bus (about 2 hours).
Another advantage is that, getting to Siphan Don by minivan may be more comfortable.
3. By boat:
When you dropped, just walk towards the Mekong, from the Nakasang, you will find out an office selling tickets to Siphan Don.
It costs about 15,000 kip per passenger, or 30,000 kip for a single person. After night, you may have to pay more, roughly 50.000 kip.
4. By plane:
It will be appropriate if you want to get to Siphan Don, because the Pakse airport is not far from the center. Firstly, you may get to the Southern Bus Station by tuk tuk (about 30,000 kip per person) or taxi (nearly 100,000 kip per person). Or, you can get directly by taxi (at the price about 800,000 kip).
