Holding the incalculable values in terms of aesthetic, geology, and geomorphology, Halong Bay was recognized twice as UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its breathtaking landscapes, this legendary bay has attracted a large number of both domestic and international tourists each year.
Located in the Northeast Vietnam, Halong Bay is a part of the Gulf of Tonkin. The Bay consists of sea areas in Halong City and Cam Pha City and a part of Van Don Island District. It shares borders with Cat Ba Island in the southwest and Bai Tu Long Bay in the northeast. Covering an area of 1,553 square kilometers, Halong Bay has 1,969 islands and islets, mostly are limestone islands. These islands are concentrated in two main areas: the southeast area (belongs to Bai Tu Long Bay) and the southwest area (belongs to Halong Bay), both are located in the core area of the Natural Heritage. The World Natural Heritage area, which was recognized by UNESCO, has the total area of 434 square kilometers including 775 islands and islets. This area has a shape of a triangle with three vertices including Dau Go Island in the west, Ba Ham Lake in the south, and Cong Tay Island in the east.
Not only known as the cradle of the ancient Vietnamese, Halong Bay is but also a great work created by the hands of the Creator. With regards to its most highlighted feature, it would be a huge omission without mentioning a stunning system of limestone islets. Until now, there are 989 islets having name, especially, they are named after its shapes, for example, Elephant Islet, Fighting Cock Islet, Incense Burner Islet, Monkey Islet, Roof Islet, Fighting Cock Islets, etc. In addition to the impressive karst islets, Halong Bay is also well-known for beautiful and charming caves. One of the most outstanding caves should not miss to mention include Sung Sot Cave, Thien Canh Son Cave, Dau Go Cave, and Thien Cung Cave.
With many alluring beaches in Ngoc Vung Island and Titov Island, Halong Bay is ideal beach holiday for those love water-based activities like swimming, kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkeling.
