Botahtaung is one of the oldest and most sacred Pagoda of Yagon. This is also the place to store the sacred hair of the Buddha. Due to the ruins of the World War II, Botahtaung was rebuilt in 1948. The distinctive characteristic of the Botahtaung Pagoda is its unusual upper most tip.
Botahtaung Pagoda is located on the bank of the river in the heart of Yangon, on Paya Botahtaung Road. This road is named after the temple. The main stupa is surrounded by smaller towers. The pagoda receives fresh air and peace of mind due to being located near the Yangon River. The name “Botahtaung” means 1,000 military leaders. This name is derived from an event.
The height of Botahtaung Pagoda is 131 feet and 8 inches. This pagoda is now standing on a foundation of 96 ft. x 96 ft. The Botahtaung Pagoda was designed and built in “Mon” style with exclusive interior architecture. This tower has unique feature, is that it is hollow so that visitors can walk through easily. The path through the stupas is the mosaic walls. All the walls and ceilings are covered with gold and contain sacred Buddhist relics decorated with gold, diamonds and precious stones.
Every year in the ancient Botahtaung Pagoda, people often organize several festivals. Most festivals are taken place during the Tet holiday. At this time there are many great festivals taking place at this temple and all the festivities are held right next to the pagoda grounds. One of the most unique festivals that taken place here is the Htamane cooking contest, attracting visitors to participate.
To get to the Botahtaung Pagoda, you can get in a taxi from the downtown, at the price fluctuates from US$ 3 to US$5.
