Recognized as the World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, Cat Ba National Park has still preserved its pristine beauty of a thousand-year-old forest. Coming to the park, travelers can escape from the hectic life and truly immerse in the nature.
Approximately 45km to the southeast of Hai Phong City and 25km to the south of Halong City, Cat Ba National Park has the geographical coordinates of 20°44′50″-20°55′29″ east longitude and 106°54’20”-107°10’05” east longitude. The park has the natural area of 16,196.8 hectares including 5265.1 hectares of the sea surface and 10,931.7 hectares of the mountainous area. It is situated on the administrative border of Cat Ba Town and 6 communes including Gia Luan, Phu Long, Hien Hao, Xuan Dam, Tran Chau, and Viet Hai.
Cat Ba National Park is a special-use forest of Vietnam and simultaneously a World Biosphere Reserve. Having diverse ecosystems including: evergreen forests on limestone mountains, flooded forests on high mountain (or Frog Ponds), mangroves in the coastal areas, sea with near-shore reefs, cave system which is home of Bats, and farming system located among deep valleys or resident areas, Cat Ba National Park is a key zone in the protection area of Cat Ba Archipelago.
The diversity of ecosystem has formed the richness in of flora and fauna in Cat Ba National Park. Over 745 species of plants have been recorded including 350 trees with medicinal properties. Many of them are rare and in need of protection such as Podocarpus fleurii, Annamocarya sinensis, Chukrasia tabularis A.Fuss, Pelthophorum tonkinensis, etc. The fauna of the park is also quite diverse with approximately 282 species, consisting of 20 kinds of mammals, 69 types of birds, 20 species of reptiles and amphibians, and kinds of frogs. In addition, there are around 98 species of zooplankton, 177 coral species, and 196 species of marine fish. Especially, Cat Ba National Park is the only habitat in the world of white-headed langur (scientific name: Trachypithecus poliocephalus) – one of five primate species in Vietnam named on the list of the world’s 25 species in danger of extinction.
