Wat Wisunarat (Wat Visoun) was built in 1513 as the oldest temple in Luang Prabang. The temple was restored and rebuilt in period from 1896 to 1898. Wat Wisunarat is located on the main street of the temple and is about 5 minutes from the central back-of-town boulevard with 10.000 kip by motorbikes (a cyclo-like passenger car).
Wat Wisunarat has a large, green grassy campus, two sides adjoining the main street and located slightly higher than the road surface. The main temple is built of brick and wooden windows almost retain the original architecture. The architecture of the temple is simple and not too sophisticated, except that the roof always has many decorative details, giving Wat Wisunarat a simple and calm beauty.

Right in front of the temple is a magnificent tower at 34.5 m – Tha Pathum. The tomb was built in 1503 due to the order of King Wisunarat’s wife and was completed in 19 months. Tha Pathum was damaged in 1895 and restored in 1932.
Behind the temple is the residence of the monks living and studying in Wat Wisunarat. Most of the new monks are very young, they are very naive and friendly. You should spend a clear and cool morning sitting in a fake wooden chair in front of a house to learn more about the life on the journey to Luang Prabang.
