Phong Nha Cave is the most typical scenic spot in the outstanding cave system of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. Phong Nha Cave is voted as one of the most beautiful caves in the world by British Carving Association with seven criteria: the longest wet cave, the highest and widest cave entrance, the largest and most beautiful sand and rock banks, the most beautiful underground lake, the most magnificent and miraculous stalactites, the most highest and widest dry caves, and the most beautiful underground rivers.
Phong Nha Cave belongs to Ke Bang limestone area in Son Trach Commune, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, about 50km to the northeast of Dong Hoi City. This is a wet cave, therefore, it takes approximately 30 minutes by boat in Son River to get to the cave entrance. The grandeur of nature with majestic mountains and luxuriant vegetation along Son river banks will make you feel as if you are getting lost in another world.
Phong Nha cave’s entrance has a shape of a trapezoid with the height of only 10 meters and the width of 25 – 30 meters. The deeper you go inside the cave, the cooler air you will feel. According to scientists, Phong Nha Cave was formed around 250 million years ago by the weathering process. The topographical forms in Phong Nha Cave are mainly limestone mountains and sandy mountains at an average elevation of 600 meters. The Cave is located in the southeast of Ke Bang limestone mountains in a strongly weathered area, which covers an area of 10,000 square kilometers and extends 200 kilometers in the north Annamite Range. Phong Nha has a groundwater system coming from small streams and flowing through Son River, Trooc River, Chay River, and Rao Thuong River. Undergone hundred of millions of years, this groundwater has run through En Cave, gone deeply inside the limestone mountains, and formed large caves as today.
