Approximately 50 kilometers from Tien Giang Province, Ben Tre is another tranquil province of the Southern Vietnam, situated in the Mekong Delta Region. The province is known as the hometown of Dong Khoi Revolution and the country’s best-known land of coconut palm trees.
Ben Tre is 85 kilometers south-east of Ho Chi Minh City. The province shares border with Tien Giang Province to the north, Vinh Long Province and Tra Vinh Province to the west and the south. Geographically, Ben Tre is wedged between two tributaries of the Tiền Giang River leading to a criss-cross system of rivers and canals throughout the province. Thanks to the favor of nature and geography, Ben Tre has healthy ecological environment with endless green coconut palm trees, lush and vast orchards, and tranquil rivers. When it comes to the most famous attractions in Ben Tre, it cannot fail to mention its beautiful islands: Con Phung, Con Oc, Con Tien; Vam Ho Bird Sanctuary, and Cai Mon Orchard.
Con Phung: Con Phung is located on a green floating islet at Tan Thach Commune, Chau Thanh District. The island is well-known for its peaceful landscapes, garden-style houses, special products from coconut palm, and traditional music “Đờn Ca Tài Tử”. Visiting Con Phung, travelers have a wonderful opportunity to visit Dao Dua relics, sit on a horse wagon to visit lush orchards, enjoy honey tea and local tropical fruits, and be immersed in the traditional music “Đờn Ca Tài Tử”. A plenty of green tourism activities are awaiting tourists to be engaged in in this beautiful land of warm-hearted and generous locals.
Con Oc: Con Oc belongs to Hung Phong Commune, Giong Trom District. It is about 12 kilometers from the city center. This is the largest floating islet on Ham Luong River with the natural area of 647 hectares. Not only owning the charming river landscape, Coc Oc draws attention visitors to its vast orchards, green palm trees, unique traditional craft villages, and especially peaceful life of honest people. Similar to Con Phung, Con Oc is a fertile land of various fruit trees; however, when making mention of the most special ones, it would be coconut and green grapefruit – the most well-known specialties. Coconut and green grapefruits grew in Con Oc have better flavors than any other regions.
Con Tien: Con Tien is situated on Ham Luong River, Tien Long Commune, Chau Thanh District. It is about 23 kilometers by road and 15 kilometers by waterway from the city center. Once setting foot in Con Tien, visitors have a wonderful opportunity to admire the simple but happy life of residents. The idyllic beauty of this tranquil river land will help you find peace for your soul.
Vam Ho Bird Sanctuary: Belong to the territory of two communes including My Hoa an Tan Xuan in Ba Tri District, Vam Ho Bird Sanctuary is a unique ecosystem, which is typical for the coastal mango forests in the Mekong Delta. Located on the right bank of Ba Lai River, Vam Ho has fresh natural surroundings and a dense system of rivers and canals. With these favorable natural conditions, this is an ideal habitat for the development of plants and animals. According to the statistics, Vam Ho is the home of more than half a million of birds with 84 different species, including Intermediate Egret, Grey Heron, White Stork, Coot, Coucal, Black Drongo, etc.
Cai Mon Orchard: Located in Vinh Thanh Commune, Cho Lach District, Cai Mon is a typical traditional village of the Southern Vietnam with narrow streets surrounded by fruit trees. Its famous fruit garden – Cai Mon Orchard is considered as a Kingdom of bonsai tree as well as a cradle of fruit trees in the South. Cai Mon can grow seasonal fruits all year round. No matter when you visit the orchard, you can always taste different type of exotic tropical fruits such as langsat, mangosteen, durian, rambutan or familiar ones like mango, banana, apple, etc.
Apart from tropical orchards, natural areas, and sightseeing spots, Ben Tre also has a great number of Buddhist monuments (Hoi Ton Pagoda, Vien Minh Pagoda, Tuyen Linh Pagoda) and graves of famous historical characters such as Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Vo Truong Toan, Phan Thanh Gian, etc.
Regarding to tourism activity, recently, Ben Tre Coconut Festival is held annually and attracts significant attention from both locals and expatriates. The festival is a great occasion to try different products made from coconut and learn more about the importance of this fruit tree to local people’s life and culture.
