Discovering the severe disasters of the Vietnamese wars in Phu Quoc Prison through varieties of historical relics of the South Vietnam
Located in the neighborhood of Cay Dua, An Thoi commune in the southern, most part of Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang Province, Phu Quoc Prison is the historical relic preserved as the significant prisoner center associated closely with the long history development in South Vietnam. Originally a prison built by the French colonialists to imprison Vietnamese in 1967 on an area of about 400ha. This is the largest detained communist detachment in the South, with more than 32,000 prisoners detained that maintains a variety of relics and historical collections waiting for tourists to discover.
Phu Quoc prison has 12 subdivisions numbered from 1 to 12 and guarded by 3 military battalions. Each camp site could accommodate about 3,000 prisoners and be divided into several subdivisions to contain 950 prisoners. Surrounding each detention area is a germination of 10 or 15 hardwood stakes with dense electric lights. Next to the guards, at the height of up to four guards armed with adequate weapons and vehicles, they are guarding, and patrolling all day and night. Especially, Phu Quoc prison is the living proof of the cruel crimes committed by the colonial regime, the imperialist invasion, and the unyielding struggle of the Vietnamese revolutionary soldiers. Prisoners of war at Phu Quoc prison were subjected to punishment, brutal torture such as nailing into hands, feet, head, burning and striking the skin, cover the boiling water or charcoal fire, and so on.
The historical Phu Quoc prison is not large today, it is located on the main area of the old prison house, there is a two-storey art exhibit and outdoor exhibits of the original artifacts and virtually remain in this place. Each year, Phu Quoc prison’s historical relic receives thousands of visitors. They were former prisoners returning to their former custody, especially young people when coming to Phu Quoc will certainly visit this site to learn about unyielding struggle of the revolutionary soldiers and pay more respects for them and heroic Vietnamese people from the war.
