Wat Xieng Thong, also known as Xieng Thong Temple, is one of the oldest and most important temples in Luang Prabang, Laos. This temple is located at the junction of the Mekong River and Nam Khan River.
The name Wat Xieng Thong means the temple of the Golden City, which is the most beautiful and important temple of Luang Prabang with its characteristic Lao architecture, the curved roof that falls near the ground. Wat Xieng Thong is the main temple surrounded by small shrines with the same architecture, forming a beautiful landscape.
The temple was built in 1560 under the reign of Setthathirath. With a large campus and many beautiful works of architecture, especially the mosaics on the walls, Wat Xieng Thong has revealed various legendary stories of the Buddha vividly.

From the outside, there are the sculptures on the walls which are carved intricately based on the Buddha legends. Interior furniture of Wat Xieng Thong and each temple is wonderful.
In 1960, Wat Xieng Thong was transformed with major details, trying to preserve the original scriptures. The dome was repaired, the carved details were restored. Wat Xieng Thong is one of the most important monasteries in Laos and is a symbolic work of religious, royal and traditional arts. The temple has more than 20 works including temples, halls, houses and additions of flower gardens and ornamental plants.

Location and opening hours :

– Location: in a garden which is on the banks of the Mekong at Xieng Thong Village, Sakkalin Road.
– Visiting hours: Everyday, from 08:00 am to 05:00 pm.
– Tourists have to pay for a minimal entrance fee, and you can hire a sarong to cover up if you need.
