Hoi An, the ancient town in the middle of Vietnam, is always a top choice for traveling throughout this charming country. However, there is no airport or railway station in this town. So how can tourists travel from there? Following is a helpful guide for those who are looking for a suitable transportation guide from Hoi An.
From Hoi An to Da Nang
Da Nang is only more than 30 km north of Hoi An. Therefore, it is very easy to get from Hoi An to Da Nang and there is a wide ranges of transportation for tourists to choose to travel.
The cheapest and most popular way for tourists is by minivan. They are the sitting ones with a price of $9 for each seat. It takes only 45 minutes to take you directly from Hoi An to Da Nang. Theses buses depart every hour daily, from 5 am to 10 pm. So don’t worry if you miss one, there will be another very soon. The bus departure point is located in the city centre.
The second way is to rent a private car with an experienced driver and pay around $25. Sitting on the back seat in an air-conditioned with such a stunning natural view outside is definitely a worthy experience.
Motorbike is also a good option if you are confident with your motorbike-riding skill. You will ride more than 30 km along the coastal road from Hoi An to Da Nang. Remember to wear a helmet to ensure safety or you will have to stop for the police’s check.
From Hoi An to Hue

If you travel by bus, you will not go through Hai Van Pass, the longest pass in Southeast Asia, after passing Da Nang.
Secondly, booking a private car is also a popular way to get from Hoi An to Hue. It is the fastest way, only 2 hours or less. And the price is from $65 to $100. The driver will pick you directly from your hotel and make sure it’s on time. You will have a chance to witness many sight-seeing along the way such as Hai Van Pass, Marble Mountains, Lang Co Beach…

From Hoi An to Phong Nha
There are a few options of travelling to get from Hoi An to Phong Nha.
Although there is no train station in Hoi An and Phong Nha, it is the best way for this route. Your train route will start at Da Nang and end at Dong Hoi. Dong Hoi is only 45 minutes from Phong Nha, you can travel from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha by minibus, taxi or renting a private car with around $35.
Another way is to travel by bus, this is the cheapest way. You can catch a bus at 1:00 pm in Hoi An and arrive in Phong Nha at 9:30 pm. It costs around $18.
If you can afford much, private car is also an option which allow you to enjoy the beautiful along the way and it can pick up & drop off at your hotel. It costs about $250.
From Hoi An to Ninh Binh
You shouldn’t miss the amazing sightseeing during the train journey from Da Nang to Ninh Binh province, so it is highly recommended to travel by train from Hoi An to Ninh Binh. However; you couldn’t get your all your journey done by only train as there is no train station in Hoi An town. You have to take a local bus or taxi to get to Da Nang train station first and it takes only around 45 minutes to finish this route. Trains run from Da Nang Train Station to Ninh Binh Train Station depart daily at 2:23 am, 1:35 pm, 6:45 pm, and 11:04 pm and arrive after 14-15 hours. The ticket price is around $34-55.
Besides, open bus is the cheapest way to get from Hoi An to Ninh Binh, it costs around $24. These buses usually depart at Hoi An at 1 pm, and arrive in Ninh Binh in next day early morning, around 5:30 am. The total journey takes around 16 hours and 30 minutes.
If you don’t want to travel by bus, train is a very good alternative. Because there is no train station in Hoi An, you have to travel from Hoi An to Da Nang first, then take a train from Da Nang to Ninh Binh.
From Hoi An to Hanoi
For such a long way from Hoi An to Hanoi, the best way is to take a train. You will have a safe journey and opportunity to enjoy the beautiful landscapes outside along they journey. As mentioned before; to get the train, tourists have to travel to Da Nang train station first as there is not a train station in Hoi An city. It will take around 17 hours for train journey and the ticket price is from $39 to $61. From Da Nang, you can choose to depart at 2:23 am, 10:03 am, 12:45 pm, 1:35 pm, 6:45 pm, or 11:04 pm.
Buses run on the route from Hoi An to Hanoi mostly depart daily at 1 pm in Hoi An, then arrive in Hanoi at around 7:30 am the next day. The average bus ticket price for these buses is $27.
From Hoi An to Nha Trang
Train is a very good option to get from Hoi An to Nha Trang. Firstly, you have catch a taxi, or local bus, or other kind of private transferring (like renting car or motorbike) to travel from Hoi An to Da Nang train station – a close city to Hoi An (only 35 km away and having a train station). Trains on this route travel a lot of times during the day, and the night trains are more favorable. Bus is a cheaper option go get from Hoi An to Nha Trang. There is daily tourist bus at 17:00 and arrive in Nha Trang at around 6:30am next day. The departure/arrival point is located in the city centre, bus fare is almost 20$ per sleeper ticket.
From Hoi An to Da Lat
Except flight, bus is the only way to get directly from Hoi to Dalat. Buses from Hoi An to Dalat usually depart daily at 5:30 pm and arrive at 12:30 am the next day in Dalat City. So you will spend totally around 19 hours for this journey. A ticket can cost $30. The bus office of Hoi An town is located on Nguyen Tat Thanh street.
Another option for you is mixture of train and bus. You can go to Da Nang first (where the closest train station is) by taxi or shuttle bus, then take train from Da Nang to Nha Trang (a night train is recommended), then take a tourist bus from Nha Trang to Da Lat which runs twice a day.
You can also take the flight from Da Nang to Da Lat with Vietnam Airlines. There is only once daily and the cost is not really cheap but that is the best way and save much of your time.
From Hoi An to Mui Ne
The distance between Hoi An and Mui Ne is around 750 km, and since there is no airport or train station in both Hoi An and Mui Ne (a beautiful beach town in Phan Thiet City, Binh Than Province), bus is the only way to cover all the distance between the two towns in one journey. It is also considered the cheapest way to travel from Hoi An to Mui Ne. The time for travelling is around more than 16 hours and the ticket price is from $30 to $35. It is a lengthy journey.
Although travelling by train on this route is a bit of hassle, it is also an option to get from Hoi An to Mui Ne. Your journey will be from Hoi An to Da Nang train station by taxi, then take the train from Da Nang to Binh Thuan train station (the train station is approx. 40 km away from Mui Ne), and finally take a taxi from Binh Thuan station to Mui Ne. You can travel from Hoi An to Da Nang by local bus or by taxi and you can travel from Muong Man to Mui Ne by taxi.
From Hoi An to Saigon
For such a long route from Hoi An to Saigon, flight is definitely a good option. However; train or bus is also a very good option for tourists. So they can have chance to see how beautiful Vietnam is through the stunning sceneries along the long journey.
To travel by train, you have to get from Hoi An to the train station in Da Nang since there is no train station in the ancient town.
If you want your trip from Hoi An to Saigon is done by only one journey, it is also possible, just take a bus.
